HEAT® INVESTIGATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

The HEAT® Investigator of the Year Award honors law enforcement for their tenacity and hard work in auto theft investigation, arrest, recovery, and prevention. HEAT® enthusiastically acknowledges that one of the primary reasons for its success year after year is the cooperation of law enforcement officers statewide!

QUALIFICATIONS

HEAT® presents the HEAT® Investigator of the Year Awards at its annual breakfast banquet in October. To qualify for the award, the case or activities of the individual or unit nominated must be the result of a HEAT® tip.

HEAT® presents awards based on population:

  • 500,001 and above
  • 100,001 – 500,000
  • 50,000 – 100,000
  • Under 50,000

NOMINATION PROCESS

Please submit the following information with your nomination to the HEAT® Director by September 1:

  • Investigative effort and case impact.
  • Number of recoveries, dollar value of recoveries, and number of suspects arrested.
  • Explain the tie-in to other cases and crimes, if applicable, and its impact on local vehicle theft problems.
  • Investigations, arrests, and warrants issued are based on auto theft activity that occurred during the twelve month period prior to July 1st of the current year.

During July, HEAT® sends letters to law enforcement agencies throughout the state to request nominees for the award. However, HEAT® accepts other nominations as well.

Members of the HEAT® Committee review the nominations and select the winners in each category. Awards are presented at HEAT®'s annual breakfast banquet in October.

Michigan State Police - Downriver Auto Theft Team

HEAT® paid $5,300 for 6 tips.

6 suspects arrested.

6 vehicles were recovered at a value of $108,125.


2001 HEAT® Investigator of the Year

Michigan State Policy - Western Wayne Auto Theft Unit

HEAT® paid $8,000 for 5 tips.

7 suspects arrested.

7 vehicles were recovered at a value of $44,025.


2001 HEAT® Investigator of the Year

Grand Rapids Combined Auto Theft Unit

HEAT® paid $6,400 for one tip.

2 suspects arrested.

8 vehicles were recovered at a value of $72,000.

Wayne Police Department

HEAT® paid $7,000 for one tip.

4 suspects arrested.

4 vehicles were recovered at a value of $75,000.





2000 HEAT® Investigator of the Year

Oakland Country Sheriff Departmnet (six person crew)

HEAT® paid $6,100 for 3 tips.

7 suspects arrested.

3 vehicles and 6 pieces of construction equipment were recovered at a value of $220,500.


2000 HEAT® Investigator of the Year

Larry Fortier of the Western Wayne Auto Theft Unit

HEAT® paid $7,550 for 3 tips.

3 suspects arrested.

5 vehicles were recovered at a value of $105,000.


2000 HEAT® Investigator of the Year

Michigan State Police - SCAR Unit (6 person unit)

HEAT® paid $10,000.

4 suspects arrested for one tip.

23 vehicles were recovered at a value of $205,600.




1999 HEAT® Investigator of the Year - Population Above 500,000

Detroit, Commercial Auto Theft Section, Metro Squad (six person crew)

HEAT® paid $11,050 for 8 tips.

14 suspects arrested and prosecuted.

14 vehicles were recovered at a value of $197,750.

6 of the tips assigned to Metro resulted in the recovery of vehicles with no prosecution.

35 of the tips assigned to Metro were investigated and closed with no recovery or prosecution.


1999 HEAT® Investigator of the Year - Population 100,000 to 500,000

Genesse Auto Investigation Network (GAIN) (seven person crew)

The GAIN Unit received 10 HEAT® tips during the twelve months prior to the nomination.

HEAT® paid $3,600 for 5 tips.

7 suspects arrested and prosecuted.

9 vehicles were recovered at a value of $34,500.

2 of the tips resulted in the recovery of vehicles with no prosecution.

2 of the tips were investigated and closed with no recovery or prosecution.
