According to a study recently conducted by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a car that is popular with thieves when new will remain a theft target for about six years. That may explain why the Oldsmobile Cutlas is high on Michigans theft list.
The NICB theorizes that:
- as a model line ages, its parts become more valuable if the model is not significantly redesigned;
- it seems to take thieves three years to fully solve the manufacturers theft deterrence systems;
- owners of older cars are less vigilant about installing after-market anti-theft devices and/or locking the vehicle.
The NICB is a not-for-profit organization that receives support from approximately 1,000 property/casualty insurance companies. The NICB partners with insurers and law enforcement agencies to facilitate the identification, detection, and prosecution of insurance criminals.
