HEAT® HISTORY

Michigan insurers initiated HEAT®, a statewide tip reward program, in 1985 to encourage citizen participation and cooperation with law enforcement agencies to curb auto theft related activity.

HEAT® is a collective effort of law enforcement agencies, citizens, and the insurance industry.

HEAT® rewards citizens for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of individuals suspected of auto theft and/or auto theft related insurance fraud, auto theft ring members, chop shop operators and carjackers.

HEAT® IS

  • A toll-free hotline for reporting auto theft activities: 1-800-242-HEAT®.
  • A cooperative effort of police agencies, citizens, and the insurance industry throughout Michigan to fight auto theft.
  • An avenue for citizens to help their local police agencies eliminate auto theft.
  • A way to let prosecuting attorneys and judges know that the citizens in this state believe that auto theft is a heinous crime which affects all of us by making our communities unsafe while increasing our taxes and insurance premiums.

HEAT® will pay up to the following amounts for qualified tips:

  • Up to $1,000 for the arrest and prosecution of individual suspected car thieves and/or individuals suspected of auto theft related insurance fraud;
  • Up to $10,000 for the arrest and binding over for trial of suspected theft ring members and/or chop shop operators;
  • $2,000 for the issuance of a warrant for a carjacking suspect

The program is funded through and administered by the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility, an association of automobile insurers in the state.

The HEAT® tip line 1-800-242-HEAT® is answered by the Michigan State Police. Calls are then funneled to the appropriate law enforcement agency for immediate investigation.

Considered a trailblazer in the area of auto theft prevention, the Michigan HEAT® Program provides free materials such as posters, flyers, and litter bags. Also available are two interactive exhibits and speakers for any interested parties or groups. For more information or to order supplies, contact the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility or John Bailey & Associates Inc.
