How to Report a Tip About

By calling 1-800-242-HEAT®, callers can offer information on auto theft activity throughout Michigan. The HEAT® tip line is monitored by the Michigan State Police Criminal Investigation Section, which directs tip information to the appropriate police agencies throughout the state.

The HEAT® tip line is staffed from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. If the auto theft activity is in progress during the hours the HEAT® tip line is not staffed, please call your local police! Then call 1-800-242-HEAT® to leave a message on the answering machine or call the tip line the next working day.

HEAT® has partnered with Ameritech Cellular so that auto theft, carjackings, and other auto theft related activity may be reported immediately. By pressing * HEAT (4328) on cellular phones in the 810 and 313 area codes, calls are linked to HEAT®’s confidential tip reward line free of charge.

Remember, HEAT® tip callers are rewarded with:

• up to $1,000 if their tip leads to the arrest and prosecution of a suspected car thief and for auto theft-related insurance fraud;




• up to $10,000 is awarded if the tip results in the arrest and binding over for trial of suspected theft ring members and/or chop shop operators.




• $2,000 for information leading to the issuance of a warrant and arrest of a carjacking suspect.
