What is VIN etching?
VIN etching is the process of placing a light but visible stencil of your vehicle identification number on each piece of glass in your car - windshield, windows and sun roof. This deters vehicle theft, since in order to resell your car with an altered identification number the thief would have to replace all of the glass in the vehicle. It is a quick process and may qualify you for a discount on the comprehensive coverage provided by your auto insurance policy.
Where can I get my vehicle etched?
The Auto Theft Prevention Authority, in partnership with AAA Michigan and H.E.A.T., conducts free VIN etching events throughout the state of Michigan from May to September of each year. You do not have to be insured by AAA or be a member of their auto club to participate. Bring your vehicle and proof of ownership (vehicle registration or title) to the location near you. In other months, contact your local law enforcement units, call one of the sources below or email us at info@miheat.org and we’ll do our best to put you in contact with a source in your area.
